Productivity during the holidays…the stress level is so high!

How_to_stay_productive_during_the_holidays_1Think about your most important roles at home and at work.

Juggling the role of parent and business owner during the holidays can be especially challenging.

The role of parent:

  • buy the perfect gifts
  • plan holiday meal
  • decorate the house inside and out with holiday cheer
  • pick up family from bus, train or plane station
  • attend several parties

The role of business owner:

  • buy the perfect gifts
  • plan holiday meal
  • decorate the office
  • plan and attend office party

If it is the day before the holidays and you find yourself in the stores, you are among the tens of millions ticking off final items.

It is our nature as human beings to want to be nice, we want to say YES, we don’t want to hurt peoples feelings.  Therefore we often bite off more than we can chew.

What can we do to manage the holidays without it hurting our productivity?  Here are some things we can do.

  1. Do not procrastinate.  Don’t leave everything to the last minute.  Plan early.
  2. Take a few days off.  A great way to use up vacation days.
  3. Schedule personal activity just as you would for business.  Use outlook or another meeting planner to schedule activities such as organizing, meal planning, shopping, travel planning etc.
  4. Create your to-do list and prioritize tasks.  Include food, travel arrangments etc.
  5. Shop online as much as possible.  Starting early will allow for delivery.
  6. Ask for help from your family and friends.  Organize and plan for potluck.  Get together for group bake offs.
  7. Take some down time.  The holidays are perfect to relax and re-charge even if we only pause for one day.
  8. Know your limits. Take care of yourself physically.  Exercise and sleep more leading up to the holiday season.
